The Princeton University Postdoctoral Fellowship is offered by the Princeton Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts, an interdisciplinary group of humanities and social sciences scholars, and invites applications for the 2023 fellowship competition.
Five fellowships are to be awarded:
Two or three Open Fellowships in any discipline defined in the Society
One Fellowship in Humanistic Studies
One Fellowship in East Asian Studies
One Fellowship in Race and Ethnicity Studies
Princeton University is a private Ivy League research university in Princeton, New Jersey. Established in 1746 in Elizabeth as the College of New Jersey, the university is the fourth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution.
The university moved to Newark in 1747 and then to the present site nine years later. It officially became a university in 1896 and was later renamed Princeton University.
Princeton University is frequently ranked among the world’s best and most prestigious universities. The university is governed by the Trustees of Princeton University and has an endowment of $37.7 billion, the largest endowment per student in the United States.
Princeton University provides undergraduate and graduate instruction in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering to approximately 8,500 students on its 600 acres (2.4 km2) main campus.
The university offers postgraduate degrees through the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, Engineering and Applied Science, Architecture, and the Bendheim Center for Finance.
Princeton University also manages the Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and is home to the NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory.
However, the university is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity” and has one of the largest university libraries in the world.
Princeton University uses a residential college system and is known for its upper-level students eating clubs. The university has around 500 student organizations. Princeton scholars embrace a wide variety of past and present traditions.
Also, the university is an NCAA Division I school and competes in the Ivy League. Its athletic team, the Princeton Tigers, has won the most conference titles and sent many students and alums to the Olympics.
As of October 2021, 75 Nobel laureates, 16 Fields Medalists, and 16 Turing Award laureates have been affiliated with Princeton University as alumni, faculty members, or researchers.
Additionally, Princeton University has been associated with 21 National Medal of Science awardees, 5 Abel Prize awardees, 11 National Humanities Medal recipients, 215 Rhodes Scholars, and 137 Marshall Scholars.
Furthermore, two U.S. Presidents, twelve U.S. Supreme Court Justices (three of whom presently serve on the court), multiple living industry and media tycoons, and foreign heads of state are all counted among Princeton’s alum body.
Princeton University has graduated many members of the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Cabinet, including eight Secretaries of State, three Secretaries of Defense, and two Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
According to data for the 2020 fiscal year, the university received about $250 million in sponsored research for its main campus, with 81.4% coming from the government, 12.1% from foundations, 5.5% from industry, and 1.0% from private and other.
Eligibility for Princeton University Postdoctoral Fellowships
- Candidates holding a Ph.D. must have received the degree at the time of application.
- Candidates not yet holding the Ph.D. must have completed a significant portion of the dissertation – at least half – at the time of application.
- Successful applicants must fulfill all requirements for the Ph.D., including the filing of the dissertation, by June 15, 2023.
- Applicants for/recipients of doctoral degrees in Education, Jurisprudence, and from the university are not qualified for Princeton University Postdoctoral Fellowships.
- Each candidate may also apply only once to the Princeton Society of Fellows.
